Marketing Tip: Give your marketing a personality

0 Comments 24 March 2006

I recently purchased a new printer for my home office. With this purchase came the accompanying need for a new USB cable. Well, I grabbed one at my local Best Buy store, and I went home to set up my new gadget. Well, I must admit some frustration with the USB packaging; I’m certain it required military tactical training to open. However, my frustration was quickly exchanged for entertainment and delight as I read the attached packaging.

"Lifetime Limited Warranty: Geek Squad Agents have been meticulously stirring a cauldron of epic proportions to provide you with a line of USB cables that ensures easy and quick connections to all of your devices. We’ve remained sun-deprived, solitary bachelors and bachelorettes, with no contact to the outside world, in the hope of ensuring the people’s right to get the most out of their technology. If you have any questions, see an Agent for details.

Enclosure: Warning – this document contains sensitive intelligence information. Top Secret. Geek Squad Agents are standing by for computer support and technological guidance 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 525,600 minutes a year… If you witness any suspicious computer behavior, contact the proper Geek Squad authorities immediately…"

Now, who can get mad at that? Computer geeks with a sense of humor. Packaging that laughs. Top secret computer agents out to save the world? So, the big guys have got it figured out – personality not only sells, it retains customers for repeat purchases.

Small business marketing tip: Don’t be afraid of what the neighbors will say. Give your marketing a personality. Be bold. Create a customer experience filled with the appropriate personality in order to be a memorable and successful small business.
