The Beginner’s Guide to Twitter – and answers to our most frequently asked questions on Twitter for small business and Main Street

0 Comments 24 March 2009

We’ve gotten asked a lot about Twitter. Here are answers to some of the questions:

Q: Do you know of small businesses or Main Streets that are using Twitter successfully?

A: Yes. We know of other Main Streets and small businesses that use Twitter. We’re not sure about the successfully part just yet. But it’s day is coming.

Q: Why are they using it?

A: We’re not sure we can tell why except in a couple of cases where it is used to send staff location updates or remind of deadlines from agencies. “Why” is code word for “what is their strategy?” They are early adopters and they’re mostly still trying to figure that out. But they know what I know and you now know: Twitter’s time is rapidly approaching, so be there or be left behind…

Q: Do I need to use Twitter right now?

A: Now necessarily. Twitter is not something that you must rush to join unless you are typically an early adopter – in which case you are already on Twitter. If so, use it, learn to love it, and we’ll address our perspective on Twitter strategy for right now as well as some thoughts on what might come down the line in term of Twitter opportunities in future posts. Stay tuned. To ignore this rapidly evolving phenomenon could be fatal, but engaging isn’t yet a requirement for 95% of Main Street organizations and small businesses.

If you’re needing to adopt Twitter, I really liked this post by the President & CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers… who I happen to admire very much. It breaks it all down simply and straightforwardly:
